Happy Fathers Day

Happy Father's Day to one whose love
Asks nothing more than that it more might give!
Praised be those whose self-love selfless proves;
Praised be those who by such pleasure live.
Years of longing find no better plight,
For everything that is, is ever here.
A love that gives, gives unalloyed delight,
Taking in more breath than it can bear.
How lovely, then, to give this day to you,
Embracing who would rather us embrace,
Rejoicing in the ballet old anew,
'Twixt give and give a shy and awkward grace!
So may you ever be on Father's Day,
Despite yourself, the hero of the play,
Accepting from your loved ones what you would
Yet give yourself to them, if you but could.

To my husband, my dad, my grandpa and uncles...and all the fathers who make my life a little better everyday!

Unfinished Projects - Life just happens sometimes

Have you ever meant to do something and kept putting it off and realized later that you been putting off this task for so long that years have passed?

Well I have one of these particular tasks which beginning this week I plan to tackle. For about six years now I have planned on putting up some pictures on picture frames and albums. But I never get around to the task of actually buying the picture frames. So today I've decided that I'm going to stop being a slacker and I'm going to tackle the task of album making and picture framing.

I am shamed to admit that two years after our wedding and I still have not made the album with our wedding pictures!!!

So this had me thinking about life in general, because if we are not looking, life passes us by so quickly and without warning...which makes us look back and say "where did the time go?" our kids grow too quickly, the gray hair comes in too quickly, the wrinkles appear, our bodies become less agile and weaker than ever before and as time passes and we begin to fall apart physically we realize all the things in life we meant to do but left aside for another day, and when this happens, it's time to make a change.

Although my body is not exactly falling apart, today is that day for me. Today I will begin my journey with pictures and I hope that everyone can look at the unfinished tasks around them and begin anew...let's finish our unfinished projects!!!!

Aim for one task, at least one...start small, choose someone you know you can finish, and then get up, roll up your sleeves and do it!

The Art of Listening

So school has started again and the routine of studying till my head explodes has begun.

However, yesterday I took a break from that routine and went out on a date with my husband. We walked holding hands, had dinner and sat outside on the patio of the restaurant, laughed, I drank wine, he drank beer, we even squeezed in a movie. It was a such a wonderful night. We don't always have time for dates, and if we do something without the kids we just catch a movie and come back home. But it was so wonderful to have that time of conversation and just telling jokes and laughing at each others silliness.

That's something that's very important for a couple. To have conversation, to be comfortable in each others presence, to be able to tell jokes and to laugh at each other, but most important to just talk about whatever comes to mind. Men shy away from talk most of the time, because women tend to always want to talk about their feelings, or gossip about other people (don't shake your head, because you know that's true), so when our husbands or boyfriends hear "let's go out so we can talk" they fear that like the bogey monster in the closet.

Talking is not something we should want to set up time aside for, everyday couples should be talking. Talk about how work was, talk about random stuff you read on the Internet, talk about the kids and their funny behavior, talk about yard work, talk about plans for the house, discuss a movie in depth....

When was the last time that your husband or wife talked to you about mundane uninteresting things and you listed with interest?

This is a problem that couples face and most of the time women feel it more than men do, and that's where the conversation "we need to talk...you don't care about how I feel" stems from. The men half of the relationship may be caring and doing nothing wrong, but to us women, not listening to our random rambling equates to not caring about our feelings. Does this make any sense to men? No. But why is that? Well it's because it doesn't make sense at all.
Just because our menfolk don't want to listen to our constant rambling about the crappy work day we had, or the crazy girl that's driving us crazy at work does not mean they don't care about us. Men's brains are different, and maybe the root of the problem is the womenfolk are not listening back.
Are you listening to your men when he talks about sports, or the book he read, or the report he had to write at work? Ahhh, that seems boring to you, well, what do you think he is thinking when you're telling him about shopping with your girls???

So how do we solve the problem?

To solve the situation couples need to practice something called "active listening". This is where you make a conscious effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, try to understand the complete message being sent.

In order to do this you must pay attention to the other person very carefully.
You cannot allow yourself to become distracted by whatever else may be going on around you, or by forming counter arguments that you'll make when the other person stops speaking.

To enhance your listening skills, you need to let the other person know that you are listening to what he or she is saying. To understand the importance of this, ask yourself if you've ever been engaged in a conversation when you wondered if the other person was listening to what you were saying. You wonder if your message is getting across, or if it's even worthwhile continuing to speak. It feels like talking to a brick wall and it's something you want to avoid. We've all had this happen with our significant others before, we are talking non stop but they look like they are in another world, and trust me, we have done it ourselves.

Acknowledgement can be something as simple as a nod of the head or a simple "uh huh." You aren't necessarily agreeing with the person, you are simply indicating that you are listening. Using body language and other signs to acknowledge you are listening also reminds you to pay attention and not let your mind wander.

So starting today, let's try something new. We are going to strive to be better listeners. We cannot ask our spouses to listen to us, if we are not listening to them. The most important step of listening is acknowledging the person and being able to summarize what they are saying to us. Ok so maybe you won't be able to spit back all the baseball stats your husband knows, but maybe you will be able to pick up on who's his favorite player, or is he unsatisfied with his job, or even that he secretly enjoys watching chick flicks with you...(hey we can hope right?)

Luckily, there are only three steps to become a better listener, so it shouldn't be hard to follow them.

Step 1: Pay attention.
Give the speaker your undivided attention, and acknowledge the message. Recognize that non-verbal communication also "speaks" loudly.
Look at the speaker directly.
Put aside distracting thoughts. Don't mentally prepare a rebuttal!
Avoid being distracted by environmental factors.
"Listen" to the speaker's body language.
Refrain from side conversations when listening in a group setting.

Step 2: Show that you are listening.
Use your own body language and gestures to convey your attention.
Nod occasionally.
Smile and use other facial expressions.
Note your posture and make sure it is open and inviting.
Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like yes, and uh huh.

Step 3: Provide feedback.
Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments, and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect what is being said and ask questions.
Reflect what has been said by paraphrasing. "What I'm hearing is." and "Sounds like you are saying." are great ways to reflect back.
Ask questions to clarify certain points. "What do you mean when you say." "Is this what you mean?"
Summarize the speaker's comments periodically.

Let's try these steps together, and if you have success and feel that communication improves in your relationship, let me know here on my blog. I will also try these steps in my own relationship.

Happy listening everyone!

Piano Recital

Yesterday Bela had her first piano recital. My princess played so well, and even though she was a little shy I think I was way more nervous than she was. I am so proud of her!

Her song was "Old McDonald", she's only five so what do you expect? But one day she will be playing Beethoven.... I dream of her older, sitting on stage, with a full audience playing beautiful classical music. I know that things might turn out completely different, she might end up liking sports and becoming an accomplished athlete, or she might turn out to be a book nerd like her mom, but either way, no matter what happens I will be proud of her.

Parents should be like that with their kids all the time. We should dream grand dreams, but never be disappointed with the results. And we should encourage and cheer our kids on, because even the smallest failure to a child can become a huge mountain of impossibility. We should teach them that it's ok to fail, it's ok to mess up during the piano recital, if you miss a step, or a key, or a hoop, or that home run, then try again, start over, keep practicing and maybe one day they will pros at whatever they choose.

I heard on the news about the guy that quit his job and used his savings to play golf for 1000 hours, he was aiming at becoming a pro, can you imagine if we all decided that we would, selfishly dedicate 1000 hours of our lives towards something worthwhile? 1000 hours at becoming good parents, or 1000 hours of community service, or even better, 1000 hours towards getting in shape...then everyone could work to becoming pros at something that mattered to them, do you know what type of lesson that would be to our kids? It would teach them so much about not giving up, about trying even when the odds are stacked against them, and about accepting a loss but not defeat, because a pro doesn't give up when he loses a golf tournament, the next day he wakes up early practices and practices and practices again the day after that, and when the next tournament comes, he is more prepared and more confident then ever.

Here's to inspiring our kids to be astronauts, or firemen, or doctors or soccer players or ballerinas... Because in the end whats important is not the job they choose, but the attitude they take towards life.

My green thumb

I must add a quick post, just to point out that my green thumb has really taken hold. I think that after this test run that I'm getting more violets for sure.

Doesn't she look beautiful? People may think I'm crazy, but I talk to her almost everyday, and I'm thinking that's causing her to grow even more!

The Mundane things in life

Isn't it exciting when we finish a task, even if it's mundane like cleaning the bathroom?

Today I cleaned the whole house, I even washed the carpets. And two daiquiris later, I sit here studying and I realized how satisfying it felt to smell the clean smell of the house.

I have my feet up, my daiquiri next to me, and the house smells divine and there's even the aroma of delicious home cooked meal in the air because I'm cooking lasagna!!!

All in all, it was a good day. Maine worked in the yard and the front of the house looks great right now.

The side of the house is still a work in progress, but most of the weeds are removed and three ugly bushes are gone. It's so much better than when we started! After the last roots from the bushes are removed, then we will get more mulch and the outside will look almost new!

Well it's now back to studying... I'm working on International Business right now and later Economics...

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Before I was a Mother

This is dedicated to all the mothers, who love their child before they live themselves.

Before I was a Mom -
I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.
Before I was a Mom -
I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never been puked on - Pooped on - Spit on - Chewed on, or Peed on. I had complete control of my mind and My thoughts. I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom -
I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests...or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom -
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom -
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known The warmth, The joy, The love, The heartache, The wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.

Beach day!

Today the beach was so awesome! We had the best time! Bela made some friends, and we attempted to swim but the water was a bit cold. So we settled for just getting our breath taken away every time the water touched our feet.

But it was fun and even though we didn't stay that long I got to tan for a bit.

Day 6

So today is Day 6 of my school break and this week has been pretty uneventful, yesterday I went to buy my school books and because my college loves to make these special TCC packages the book can only be bought from them so you're stuck like chuck, this one specific calculus book was $121.95. Holy crap!!!! Luckily I can rent my other two books so the price tag won't be as high, but seriously.... Book prices is highway robbery!!!

We are doing a bit of yard work this morning, then taking the little girl to the beach. I can't wait because I seriously need a tan, I'm so white I'm starting to disappear, soon my family is going to wonder where I am because I'm going to be transparent like ghosts in a movie... Lol

Day 2

Today is day 2 of my school vacation and I'm simply loving it. It feels so good to come home and be able to actually talk to my husband, and sit outside and relax. Right now I'm wearing my swimsuit and I'm sitting outside getting some sun, the breeze is blowing, all I'm missing is a beach. I'm buying a pool next month! We would have one if ours didn't get hole in it last summer.

I can close my eyes and empty my mind and distress. I cannot wait to graduate, then I will be able to do this all the time.

Life is good!

I'm free falling!

I'm so excited! About to take my very last exam for the semester and then vacation for two weeks! I need this mental break so badly I can taste it. But my next few days will be filled with things to do. First I need to organize my closet, which is a huge mess right now.

Then I need to organize all my drawers, because I can't even find anything in them.

Also, part of the organization and clean up will be the yard work which is in bad shape right now. Jermaine had been working hard to clean up but I really feel that I need to roll up my sleeves and pitch in. Since the spring rains, the weeds have taken over...but together we will get everything looking real nice before summer is here.

Doesn't seem like much of a vacation, but that's what I have to do when for four straight months I have no time for anything but the books.

Renata - in the raw -make up free for all to see

On my last lab of Microbiology we did a test on the uses of various disinfectants, and Hydrogen Peroxide was proven the most effective against growth of bacteria. The zone of inhibition for hydrogen peroxide was greatest for all the bacteria tested. Note on the picture below, the hydrogen peroxide soaked circle (top left), had the biggest zone of inhibition, meaning bacteria could not grow anywhere near it. So this got me thinking - I learned in lecture that acne is caused by Propionicbacterium Acnes - and this being a bacteria, I wonder if the hydrogen peroxide would work on my acne???

So I put it to the test... I put away all my acne medication, and everyday for two weeks followed this routine: washed my face with warm water and soap, and then with a cotton ball, cleaned my face with Hydrogen Peroxide every morning and night.
Now I know there are countless websites on google praising the wonders of Hydrogen Peroxide, and I'm here to tell you that it is true!!! I'm here today to to show everyone that Hydrogen Peroxide will clear acne. But a few rules must be followed: Ladies, those make up sponges, full of bacteria...throw them away and get a new one. At least once a month they should be replaced. For everyone - if you are prone to acne, your pillow case should be changed every three days, but at least once a week. Also, do not use wash cloths more than once for cleaning your face.
And with this said I give to you the new and improved Renata. Its not perfect, but my acne has 90% disappeared and I still have scars but with a few microdermabrasion treatments I will almost new again! Lol
Drumroll please....

Ta da!!!! This is me, au natural.... What do you think???
Friends, stop wasting your money on expensive acne treatment, I would suggest at least buying a face cleanser, but aside from that, Proactiv, and whatever else is out there costing you hundreds of dollars a year, STOP BUYING IT! Go to the pharmacy section and buy you a $3 bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide and you will see results.
But you must follow the rules above, no dirty make up sponges, pillow cases, towels and face cloths.
Let me know how it goes!

Anywhere but here....

Sitting here studying for my next final and I'm listening to tranquil nature sounds... One of the tracks has ocean sounds in the background and it made me wish to be sitting on a deserted beach with Jermaine while Bela played in the sand making sand castles, sipping some fruity drink instead of stressing about this test. Work was extremely busy today. So busy I barely had time for lunch, but it was a good day, got a lot accomplished and I left feeling like I earned my pay.

Maybe soon this weather will stabilize and beach days will be in my future.

For now, it's back to studying and daydreaming about a nice sunny relaexed day with a fruity drink in my hand,

Sunday Morning - a Mother's Day message

Sunday's are my favorite days of the week.... I get to sleep in, and cuddle in the morning with my wonderful husband, Bela comes in the room and jumps in the middle of us and before we're even awake she asks if she can watch cartoons, or play barbies.

On Saturday when we were getting dressed to go to the dentist, she looked at me with adoration in her eyes and said, "Mom you look so pretty" that small statement filled me with happiness, not because she said I'm beautiful, but because the high pedestal that I sit in her world.... The older our kids get the lower our pedestal gets as parents, until teenage years come and they hate our guts because hormones are pumping into their bodies messing with their emotions, and because I'm not looking forward to that moment, I basket in the happiness of being a beautiful superhero in my daughters eyes.

The little moments her and I have as mother and daughter fill me with such happiness, and these moments are the true reason some women go to such extent to become mothers. For the moment when your child looks at you and you know that for this small part of their lives, that we mothers are their world. We are the Wonder woman they strive to be in their dreams.

So in that moment, when Isabela said I was pretty, I hugged her real tight and thanked her for thinking that I was beautiful and then she said something that brought tears to my eyes -she said "mommy, when I grow up I want to be just like you." That small statement made a huge impact on me, because it brought home the full realization that this tiny person is looking up at me, and for every moment in my life I must strive to be the person she will be proud to look up to. This is why I am trying so hard to study and to graduate, because I want my daughter to see that when we work hard for that something, that anything is possible in life. When I'm teaching her the piano and she turns to me and says - I can't do it - I always say to her - "why not, have you even tried? Don't ever say you can't do something until you have at least tried it." I want her to know that nothing in life is unreachable, that she should never give up on her dreams, and that until she has tried she should never give up.

So with that said, here I am sitting studying for this impossibly hard exam because I'm reaching for my dreams, and December here I come!!!

Me and the boredom

Sitting here studying but really wanting to be in a warm paradise with my honey sipping umbrella drinks and doing anything but memorizing the Pathogenesis of skin infections!!!

This huge final next week is making me sick with worry about my grades, but as always I tend to worry for no reason, so maybe I should just dive head first into the books and come out for air when things are over, that would be so much easier to do if this class wasn't so freaking boring!

On top of it all my day at work was so crazy and hectic that concentrating is not on my nĂºmero Uno thing to do....

Oh well, now back to the regular scheduled programming.

Tiny ants

Right now I'm sitting on an airplane, next to two completely random strangers, and our paths crossed only because the three of us had a need to be on this specific 111am flight from San Diego to Atlanta, in fact it can be argued that I am sitting on a plane with 100 strangers, all moving from one point to another on the globe, all with a destination.

It is interesting to think how God sees people, randomly moving within towns and cities and between states and countries, little ants....moving onward with our journey, but essentially alone.

Yes, we have the group of people who know our intimate thoughts and who know our weakness and strengths, those who know our favorite color, our favorite restaurant, our favorite way to sleep. We have the persons that love us and make us feel safe in their arms... But what about those that don't? What about the little tiny ants who move through the crowd alone, afraid of human contact? An airplane is a perfect way to be sitting right next to one of those people and yet never know their inner struggles.

and you know why this is? People are scared of opening their intimate thoughts to others, they are scared of sharing a moment with another, even if it it's a mundane moment, a smile, a laugh, an acknowledgement.... Try to look someone right in their eye when they talk to you.... You will find that most of the time people avoid your gaze, and why is that? Once again, the fear of letting people in. This is especially true when a person speaks to a stranger.

I tried this theory while I traveled to San Diego. On my last night, I sat at the bar at one of the local seafood restaurants and after I had ordered, the bartender a nice lady probably in her early forties and a native of the area, started to make small talk, as most bartenders tend to do. While we spoke, I looked her straight in the eye whenever I answered a question, and attempted to continue doing so whenever she spoke, which I'm positive she found disconcerting because she sought another conversation with a recently arrived couple and left me to enjoy my delicious dinner.

But this is how we are as human beings, we are considered the most intelligent of beings, at a higher level than any other mammal on earth, but yet our senses are so clouded we cannot recognize a need in someone even if it's staring us straight in the face. How many people do we work with, or work out next to, or even talk to everyday that are experiencing struggles in their lives, but we are too blind to see it?

It's read once that a study was conducted about the link between animals, such as a dog or cat, with humans. A dog was placed in a room with a few people and some one those people had suffered a great loss or had something happen to them which caused sadness. The people were instructed not to call to the dogs, and the dogs, although not prompted, more often than not, sought the company of those specific people that were sad, or troubled, even though the dog had never seen any of those person's before. Isn't that amazing?

We should strive for that in life, to set aside our own interests to find commonality with others, to become close to people, especially those that love us the most but that we keep at an arms length and perhaps we will learn much more about ourselves.
